In the past, hand-fed platens have sometimes caused serious injuries or death to operators. These events happened when operators reached into the machine when it was in the 'dwell' mode. However, when they did so, power to the hand-fed platen was not isolated and the safety devices that had been fitted to the machine did not prevent the platens from closing.

Recognising these worrying incidents, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) issued a Safety Alert publication which pointed out the risks to companies in the print and cardboard packaging industries. The Safety Alert states, in particular that 'suitable procedures may include isolation and lock-off of the power supply or other equally effective measures before the operator attempts to gain access onto the hand-fed platen.' In addition, the Safety Alert goes on to list a series of European Standards to which new machines should conform if they were purchased after 2005.

The beam is 350mm above the cutting plate of the hand-fed platen, allowing the operator to feed the machine easily when in 'dwell' mode. The Crosland VK ESPE is very unobtrusive and can quickly be installed in one day by our highly skilled and exceptionally experienced engineers. The unit is sealed and cannot be by-passed - and in the unlikely event of a problem occurring whilst in operation, it will always fail to 'safety' mode and stop the machine from running.
