Crosland VK - supplying and fitting laser guards - providing reliability and safety in hand-fed platen operation

Crosland VK is the world's largest independent manufacturer and supplier of hand-fed platens and automatic cutting/creasing machinery. Responding to a recent Safety Alert issued by the Health and Safety Executive, Crosland VK can now ensure the safe operation of a hand-fed platen whilst in the 'dwell' cycle of the machine. This mode has, in the past, resulted in serious or fatal injuries to operators of hand-fed platens, with accidents occurring when operators reached into the hand-fed platen whilst it was in the 'dwell' mode. Under these circumstances, power to the hand-fed platen was not isolated and the safety devices fitted to the machine did not prevent the platens from closing.

The HSE's Safety Alert makes numerous proposals - including, most significantly 'suitable procedures... (which)... may include isolation and lock-off of the power supply or other equally effective measures before the operator attempts to gain access onto the hand-fed platen.' The Safety Alert goes on to list a number of European Standards to which new machines purchased after 2005 should conform.

Crosland VK's solution to this potentially dangerous problem involves the installation of a laser guard onto the hand-fed platen, so as to ensure that the hand-fed platen operates with total safety, whilst also conforming to the proposals contained in the HSE's Safety Alert. Crosland VK can supply and fit laser guards to your hand-fed platens, ensuring that the machines will operate safely in the 'dwell' mode.

These laser guards will provide non-contact monitoring of a freely programmable area - and since the laser guard requires no separate reflectors, installation is easy because the laser guard's sender and receiver are contained in a single housing.

The laser guard for the hand-fed platen is mounted above the hand-fed platen, and sends out a signal which covers the entire cutting plate area. What's more, the beam of the laser guard for the hand-fed platen is 350mm above the cutting plate, allowing the operator to feed the machine easily when in 'dwell' mode. In addition the laser guard for the hand-fed platen is very unobtrusive and can quickly be installed in one day by our skilled and experienced engineers. The unit is sealed and cannot be by-passed - and in the highly unlikely event of a problem, it will always fail to 'safety' mode and stop the machine from running.

The laser guards for the hand-fed platen supplied by Crosland VK are sourced from Sick, a world leader in sensor technology. Sick laser guards and Sick's industrial application solutions ensure reliable and efficient control of processes in order to protect operatives from accidents, and for preventing environmental damage.
